SOUTH ASIAN RHYTHMIC SYSTEM
Method of the South Asian rhythmic system
THE BASIC FRAMEWORK OF THE SOUTH ASIAN RHYTHMIC SYSTEM
Method by Dietrich Wöhrlin
The traditional South Asian music, with its complex rhythmic systems, is undoubtedly one of the most sophisticated in intellectual terms of all the music cultures of our world. Those wanting to get closer to this music and its highly complicated rhythms, often find themselves forced to spend years of study in the company of a South Asian music guru, often without, however, being able to pass on what they have learned or acquired in an easy-to-understand way to people with western listening habits.
The aim with this book is to create a communication tool that is available to interested Western ears as well as to the guardians of South Asian tradition. I am fully aware of the size of this task as the author. Neither a dictionary-like term compendium could do justice to this subject, nor something like a comparative grammar, because the „taking in“ of something completely foreign is not possible with objectifyable methods, but is always a subjective experience. However, objectifying aids can be very useful in this process. I have tried to liberate the actual topic from the initially confusing cultural baggage, to simplify it, and thereby expose its fascinating mathematical framework.
